Thanks Sam and Lawrence. I think I've managed to work around the first problem [1], that when you enter a mataData macro into most templates using the Prefs|Advanced forms, Manila screws up the macros. The workaround was to edit the templates directly in the database, such as SiteManilaWebsite.#newsSite.discussionGroup.msgTemplate. I believe that if one puts any macro other than such as {author} and {subject} into this template (and most others), the macro is destroyed by the code that processes the HTTP POST of the Prefs page. But other templates in other text boxes on the same page, don't have this problem. Weird, but probably just some inconsistancy in the code.

So I can get around this corruption problem by editing the template in the database using wp. Now the only problem is that the macros aren't actually processed. They're replaced with (apparently) no characters. I'll use Sam's clue to see if I can find where the macro should be processed.
