There was a thread [1] some time ago about a user-defined call back when a new member signs up for a site. Was this ever implemented?

I would like new users to a particular site to be automatically assigned as contributing editors (it will eventually be an editors-only site) but I would prefer them to register (signup) themselves rather me do it through the admin page. Unless there is a simpler way eluding me, I figured on using a callback for this.
