New Message: News Items - special macros - date formats

It appears that the \{postTime} macro in the news item template on a Manila site is hardwired to generate the date in USA format mm/dd/yy. This format is counter-intuitive in many countries outside the USA (e.g. here in Australia) and can confuse people no end. Is there a way around this limitation? The date format popup menu on the appearance prefs page has no effect on such dates. Surely it should? Or a similar popup menu on the news prefs page?
