Where are rendering errors recorded?

Yes. There is a log category/preference, which is set to "true" by 
default, that tracks rendering-time macro errors, which tend to be 
the most common type of rendering error. Just look in the log file to 
see if there is an htmlMacroErrors table, and entries for the hour 
and minute(s) that you did your render.
