Frontier and Filemaker under OS X

I recently upgraded from Frontier 6 under Mac OS 9 to Frontier 7 and
then 8 under OS X, and have run into a problem that has stopped me
dead. A number of my Frontier scripts call various Filemaker
databases in simple ways -- for instance

DBRow =  get(record[cell[1] == someValue])

Under OS 9, (Frontier 6.0.5, Filemaker 5.0) this lookup was almost
instantaneous. Under OS X, on the other hand, it can take 20-30
seconds to retrieve a single record from a 1300-record database. This
is a show-stopper since I often have to go through thousands of
lookups.

I don't think this is a Frontier problem -- the same thing happens
with Applescript under OS X. But I wonder if anyone out there has had
a similar experience, and if there's a cure for it? Is anyone out
there using Filemaker in this way, and have you run into speed
problems -- or is it something purely local in my setup or copy of
Filemaker or something? If anyone uses calls like this with success,
I'd love to hear at least that it's possible.

I'm running Frontier 8.0.5, Filemaker 5.5v1, MacOS X 10.1.3 on a
Powerbook G4 500 MHz, with 512 MB memory, if that's any help.

Many thanks,

Nick Cahill
