trouble updating root

[Resending because this didn't show up on the list:] Doing a recent update, about half the new items failed to install. Some had names like system.verbs.builtins.tcp.im.rpi.encode (I have no im table in my tcp table). I don't remember the names of the others, and Frontier does not list the ones that failed.

So now I have two questions:

(1) How can I make the update work?

(2) How can I do the update at all, since Frontier does not know that some of the items failed to update?
