Background
In 1999, when Manila was first released, spam had not yet become the rampant problem it is today. Now, in 2003, there are all kinds of email address harvesters, even ones written specifically for Manila sites. They know where to look. So we've changed the implementation of Manila to hide the email addresses.
How to
The updated version of Manila is running on all UserLand servers.
To get the update for your own Manila installation update manila.root and mainResponder.root. To do so, visit the xxx page on the xxx.
Notes
Where email addresses used to appear in the user interface they are replaced with serial numbers, which are mapped to email addresses, invisibly in the membership database for each site. The numbers are assigned dynamically as users' information is accessed. So for existing Manila sites, the numbers will not indicate the order in which people became members. For new sites, it will. If you have questions about how this is implemented ask them on the new Manila-Dev mail list.
