Thanks Thomas - That makes sense, although I would say that my
suggestion here would be that there would be an official "release"
option for a news item so it doesn't have to be released onto the
homepage.

I think the logic here is that a News Item isn't available to the 
outside world until it has been posted to the home page (released). 
You don't want people reading News Item that are in progress or 
haven't had an editors approval.
