moving a site problem

I have a previous manila site(s) that used a shared membership under
v8.x that I can't access.

I upgraded the server to OSX and Frontier 9 - Clean installs on both.
The OS runs from a separate partition.

before I wiped everything and I was still running in os9 and frontier
8, I turned off the group membership for all sites - at least I thought
I did. and I did the uninstall following the directions here following
the uninstall, move, and re-install procedure as directed.

Using "copy" from the edit menu locked up frontier, I'm sure because
the files are large.

I simply opened the file and re-installed the sites as directed. I have
lost all editing access to the sites.

I can't change the membership group from
createASiteManilaWebsiteMembers using the site prefs.
  http://frontier.userland.com/usersGuide#Membership

error message is
"Couldn't change the membership group for "Saluki Sports", because
there is no group named "Sports2003""

I created a site named http://newshound.de.siu.edu/createASite/ but
it does not seems to be linking up.

  this discussion seems incomplete.

I could really use a set of steps to recover from this and get access
to my sites. I don't think I did anything wrong here and it still blew
up in my face.

We start publishing again, today - and can't post anything to the
sports site or the editorial site. (i.e. when I go to
http://newshound.de.siu.edu/Sports2003/member/login - I can log in but
I have no editorial access and no edit this page buttons or editorial
menu. I'm listed as the owner and a managing editor according to site
prefs but the Membership group is "createASiteManilaWebsiteMembers"

I do not want to use group membership again - I feel I've been burned
with it.

I have direct access to the server.

Thanks!
