Gems list slow on W2K

Thank you Lawrence and John for getting back to me.
In researching the problem I did come across John Newitt's mention of the
problem back in 5/02,
<http://frontier.userland.com/discuss/msgReader$10189?mode=topic>. I was just
hoping that something may have been changed in Frontier version 9.
I did do some experimenting and added 50 large gems (2.5MB in size) to a test
site, checked their load time then removed them and added 50 small gems (1K in
size) and compared the load time. As Lawrence mentioned, size does make a
difference. The large gems took 25-27 seconds and the smaller gems loaded in
3-4 seconds. So it seems the way that Frontier determines the file sizes on W2k
(and apparently NT) is the bottle neck. So, as suggested by Sam DeVore in 5/02,
the best solution may be the "use of the file.size verbs and see if there might
be a way to cache that information in the creation of the gems list rather then
doing it every time".
Thanks again,
Allyson

Is anyone else experiencing slow load times with their gem lists on Win2K? I
have a Manila site with 60+ gems that is taking 45-55 seconds to load the gem
list (and therefore, well over a minute to post a new gem). The gems range
between 3k and 8.1MB with an average of about 1.7MB. The gems and my static
rendered sites are served by IIS, which is running on the same machine. I have
tried the "Save a Copy As ..." to compact the roots and defragmented the drive,
but there was no improvement in performance. Does anyone have any other
suggestions?
Other Info: Frontier 9, Win2k SP3, P3-800, 512MB, 18.2GB (with about 4GB free)
Thanks,
Allyson

Hi Allyson,
=20
Thanks, I'll pass along a report. There was a previous report about this
problem and it might have something to do with the lookup the list and =
the
size of the files that is causing the slow load time.
