Thanks, Alan and Lawrence -- haven't solved it yet but good suggestions. The web page cited by Lawrence will help my ISA guru a lot.
I've discovered a related snag. This same issue prevents RSS feeds from being compiled correctly in frontier.root's user.xml.rss.cache.(URL).compilation table. With firewall authentication on, all the table gets is an empty "Item1" value. With it off, the table is built correctly as soon as the first user hits a viewRssBox{} macro. The effect is that all viewRssBox{} macros implanted in stories while the ISA server's authentication was turned on generate a macro error on the page stating that "channelTitle" has not been defined.
It makes me wonder how many more features of Manila will be nonfunctional as we begin to experiment with them because of this. I'd think that ISA is a big enough player in the marketplace that some work needs to be done on Frontier/Manila to get them talking, or something needs to be said in the product caveats. Having already had my entire school district staff create pages in my otherwise-working copy of Manila, guess which one of these I'd prefer? :-)
