Lots of Manila still does expect a valid email address to identify the member.

Go take a look at manilaSuite.emailNotification.getMemberName, it uses the memberkey interchangeably with the email address.
/

As I understand the code, there is nothing forcing the member key to be in the format of an email address <me\@mydomain.tld>. Not that I've done an exhaustive search for such checking.

/
manila.member.login (which is responsible for emailing the user his/her password) works the same way. Using a non-email address as the memberkey will break this functionality in Manila.
/

Correct. Not using a valid email address means Manila won't be able to function to its fullest.

/
The whole system of using the email address as the memberkey should be dropped, then once we have a true email address field, we can validate THAT in the way Rogers describes.

Anything else is just a workaround of the current problem.
/

I too would like to see the option of not having to use the email address as the member key. Ideally Manila would "understand" that at a fundamental level and behave according.

Toodle-loooooooo..........
