no email

My server is not seen to be sending email notices any longer to new 
members.

I went to settings?page=1.13 --  Email Config and sent myself a 
message, I got an error which referred me to THIS page about LF's  
http://cr.yp.to/docs/smtplf.html

(Can't send mail because of an unexpected server response. I said "." 
and the server replied "451 See 
http://pobox.com/~djb/docs/smtplf.html.". )

Any idea what generating this error? Where do I even begin to look??
