Regarding the skull (discussion link) metaphor...

Typical discussion threads live for a few days and then die: they are
preserved for years in digital storage as lifeless husks, occasionally
stumbled upon by random passers-by ... much like bleached skulls in a desert?

(or so ISTM, although I do think Manila's usability could be improved
with a different out-of-the-box default)
