How not to use Shortcuts

I'm a lamo. I know this is real easy, but I can't figure it out.

How do you turn off shortcuts like Dave did on Scripting.com today? For
instance, I want to have  "thinkUsa" show up just like that (I don't
want it to convert to the flag). So, how do I turn it off just for one
instance (on other places on my page I do want the shortcut to work). 

I've looked at this page, but didn't find anything about how to turn
them off.
