Linking to images from static sites

Try this,
Use your pictures menu to 'Add a new picture' - add the picture again giving
it a new name. Copy the title you give it - press 'Post New Picture'; your
image will be uploaded and a shortcut created automatically. Don't do
anything else - just proceed to the next step.
Paste the new title you have just copied into your pictureRef() macro.
Do you still get the same error message?
