Listing news messages by Department

the viewNewsItems macro is nice because you can pass the items through a 
custom template and set a limit on the number returned; however, there 
doesn't seem to be a way to get ALL news items passed through the 
template... I'd like to list the most recent 10 items in my nav bar, with 
only their name, as a link to the actual item, but I haven't been able to 
figure out how to do it
