html tags all over user notifications

Does anyone out there know how we can get rid of the extra html tags
that gets mixed in with the user notifications besides having to copy
into notepad and repasting into the blogger interaface? Obviously, the
users can't make any sense of the garbled information and I'm trying to
figure out a solution on the back end.
