It's not only a flag, potentially in each message. There's also an index in the newsSite indxes table for stories and pictures. I like the idea of additional categories, but itwoudl need to be thought thru systematically.

BTW, I wrote the addedValue plugin to add attributes to messages in the way I suspect you are using them.
