Bad luck, you've been discovered by the referer spammers. They want to get many sites pointing to them so they achieve a higher Google ranking (or at least that's what some pundits say).

A denial of service attack would defeat their agenda as well as yours, as the robots must find the links to up the ranking. You can help ensure they don't benefit from polluting your site statictics by setting the rel nofollow option in the discussion groups preferences.

There are soem other, not very effective tools to deal with this kind of pollution after the fact, nothing I know of removes the pain completely.
