It's also possible to set the discussion group so that it doesn't display news items. You can check this setting on Prefs -> Discussion Group, near the top.

In Manila 9.6, you'll be able to delete a news item by clicking its Edit link on the home page, or on an archive page, and then clicking the Delete button on the Edit News Item page.

Manila 9.6 is scheduled for release in mid-April.
