The simplest way without replacing any values in Manila would be to not change the location where the actual gems/pictures are saved to. And map apache.server.com/frontier_files/ in the Domains settings page to the same folder.

Or you can make the changes as you described, but for each file you'll need to update the corresponding gem/picture table along with the shortcuts.

This sample script for copying pictures might be helpful if you want to do the second option:
