Thanks for the response Steve. I pasted your code into one of my sites #objectNotFound handler. Tried to compile and got a syntax error. Corrected one error but I'm not familier enough with scripting yet to get it to compile.

Just knowing where to put the code to do this is a big help. My imediate thought is to simplify this by simply using this objectNotFound handler to forward the user to mydomain.com/error for instance. Then I could create a story at /error and modify it through the manila interface. Would that be a kosher thing to do? If so I might try and make that the first script I write.
