Creating my own RSS feed

I'd like to hand-code some RSS feeds with a little Manila help.  I've  
tried finding/following the routine that generates the RSS feed, but  
it seems to elude me.  What I am looking for is the routine that  
takes a page as input and spits out the RSS as output.  I know it is  
more complicated/involved than that, but if I could be pointed in the  
right area to be poking around, I can hopefully figure it out for  
myself.
