New Message: Truncating News Item titles in sidebar

I have a Recent Posts section in my sidebar, generated by this:

{viewNewsItems (20,newsItemTemplate:"{itemTitle}
")}

I'd like to left-substring all of the itemTitles to a specific length, to prevent them from wordwrapping. I've looked for a LEFT$() feature or equivalent, but am likely looking in the wrong documentation.

Is this possible?
