New Message: Story Deletion

Assuming one wants to delete and permanently remove a story, what is the correct process ?

I have had a look in the manual and cannot see this subject mentioned. I would just like to see the official line .. is it ...

1. click the delete story option on the Admin box.

 - after which the page if navigated to will display "This message has been deleted."

2. Work out the msg $ number for the story, go into the site structure xml or table and remove the entry for that story ?

Please confirm if that is the correct procedure ...
