Is there a simple way of displaying the total count of entries per department in the sidebar?

For example:

 * DepartmentA (12)
 * DepartmentB (3)
 * DepartmentC (26)

The list of departments would ideally be dynamically populated, too, rather than statically defined in the default Site Navigation menu.
