I have been thinking about buying an xServe but its only advantage over a mini is that it fits into a rack which is important to colocation companies.

I think you're overlooking quite a lot if you think that's the only difference between an xserve and a mini. I might be able to accept the statement "...the only advantage important to me at the current time is..."
