John, its a lot easier to use a javascript library to play with AJAX. I've added AJAX support to my addedValues plugin using the RICO libary from openrico.org , there's an writeup here http://www.addedvalues.org/help/miscellaneous/ricoix.

addedValues uses AJAX to deal with the display of hits from a search.
