I believe a bug fix was released in 2005 for this issue. Could you open Frontier, choose Main->Jump and enter the following then click OK:

manilaSuite.themes.apply

If you do a search in the script window that opens, do you see this line?

"Fix a bug which caused sites to break when certain, older discussion group themes were applied."

Also, just to confirm you saw the error message just in the discussion group pages?
