One indication that a biological system losing robustness is a loss of members of the system. For example, a terminal forest which is not degraded by bad hunting regulations and poor culling of trees might have 7 healthy forest floor herbivore species. The fewer species the less capable the total habitat of surviving various 'tests' of its equilibrium.
