I'm still messing around with this and have considered several approaches:

Just a little more back ground in case anyone's interested. 1) I'm using manila 2) I'd like to build an audit trail when a user views a message and keep that trail with the message.

* tried using mainresponder.security.httpAthenticate...this looked like the way to go (nice popup box, can access membership data, etc) but things didn't seem to work (admittedly I didn't spend a lot of time here). The biggest problem was that I needed the timeout (noncesExpireAfterMinuntes) to be instantaneous since I want to be able to use this repeately in a short period of time...my problems may have to do with 'digest authention' whatever that is.
* I tried doing a little javascirpt (total newbie here) and could get a box to popup but then I got stuck trying to move data from javascript to frontier (this must be possible).
* I thought about putting up a form (in the navbar perhaps) that allows a user to type in a password...when the user submits, the action should fire a script that checks what the user typed in vs what's in their membership table. But I've run into this problem before and I'm not sure how to call a frontier script directly as a form action...the only way I've been able to do this is redirect to a page that has a call to the macro embedded in it.

This is a Manila site.. http://manila.userland.com/.
