I may only be talking to the few Mac OS 9 Frontier server managers but I think I have come up against the mythical Frontier RAM performance hit mentioned on previous occasions though never properly verified.

After solving the slow Frontier launch time by increasing the RAM partition allocated to Frontier to at least 350Mb, I've noticed that Frontier is now serving Manila pages slower than when it was only 250Mb, not a lot, but you can tell it's slower (by looking at the Control panel HTTP readout. Dropping back down to 250Mb RAM increases Frontier performance but brings back the 60+ second launch time!

There's something very funny going on with Frontier 7.0.1 for Mac OS 9, or is it there's something very funny going on with Mac OS 9 and it's in Frontier that the problem manifests?

Any other Mac OS 9 Frontier 7.0.1 sysops like to comment?

Mac OS X would probably solve my problem but my machine is maybe too old to benefit. In fact, would anyone like to comment? It's an old 8600 boosted to G4 using an XLR8 card. It'll have the G4 processor power but with a slow system bus. Is it worth giving it a go, does anyone think?

Cheers,

David.
