I suppose what I need to do is pre-emptively insert backslashes to escape some characters. I think I'll need to do this on the AppleScript side, doing the find-replace type operation within the variable containing the TextEdit text.

I don't know if using the clipboard might be an option or not, since I think the moment it hits a variable or gets otherwise passed around throught the script, the quotes (and etc.) will get escaped anyway.
