  You would be amazed what you can do when you have your own server. 
There is a very rich backend to manila that you can do many things 
with far beyond what you can do with traditional ssi's.  Look at the 
plugin architecture (  http://plugins.userland.com and 
http://plugins.weblogger.com ) also at the things that are already 
built at http://macros.userland.com  there are so many things you can 
add, put out an idea someone here can help you to find the path to a 
solution  (you can see one educationally oriented plugin at 
<shamelessplug> http://www.teachesme.com </shamelessplug>)
