We've just released a set of changes that allow you to do what you need. Here's how:

1. Update manila.root to get the new parts.

2. To disable the Edit button for existing sites, use Ctrl-; to open the Quick Script window on the server, paste in the following script, and click the Run button:

for adr in @config.manila.sites {try {adr^^.["#newsSite"].flNavigatorEditButton = false}}

3. If you want to disable the Edit button for new sites created after this point, set manilaData.newSiteTemplate.["#newsSite"].flNavigatorEditButton to false.

There's also a new checkbox below the Navigation XML on the Advanced Prefs page, which you can use to enable or disable the Edit button on a site-by-site basis.
