Ah right, I missed the significance of where you said you were using a macro to set the flag.

One way I handle things like this is to add a path attribute to the site structure entry for the story and test for that flag. By path attribute I mean an additional flag set in the site structure. I wrote a macro called pathatt to retrieve the value, but it can be called out of firstfilter.

Nice thing about this approach is that you get a user interface for free.
