That's an interesting thought. We already make extensive use of additional attributes in site structure, and have long-ago developed an extended editing interface exclusively for site structure and those additional attributes.

That would certainly take care of the flag-not-defined problem in firstFilter and probably take care of the updateRenderStatus and redirect, too.
