Most Read Pages -- how to totally kill old messages?

I noticed on the most read message page (available from the stats page) 
that some messages that I had deleted -- they still appear on most read 
pages.

Isn't there any way to truly delete these messages that I don't any 
more, once and for all? It doesn't make any sense to me why the 
messages (including the message count) can't be reset back to zero 
(with all messages erased), if that's what the managing editor wants to 
do.
