You don't _have_ to keep the news items on your homepage. You can 
create a new story page (that you keep a link to in your navigator 
bar, e.g. "News") and use the viewNewsItems macro
<http://macros.userland.com/basic/viewNewsItems>

Since you are using weblogger, you can also use the Newslink plugin
<http://macros.weblogger.com/newsLink>
to make it easy to access News Items features from the "Editors Only" 
menu when your homepage is not a News Items style page.
