New Message: Edit with App failing

I have used "Edit with App..." successfully on OS X since there was an OS X. The only issue has been that the editing app (usually BBEdit) must already be running, or I would get a "Mac OS Error: -600" error.

Now I get this error every time: "Could not complete the message to msExplorer because of the following error: Mac OS Error: -600"

Tracing through the code, it seems to be failing at this line in suites.odbEditor,edit:

local (ideditorapp = file.creator (adreditorapp^))

file.creator(pathToApp) is not returning the correct string4 (which should be "R*ch" for BBEdit); it's returning an empty string. If I manually add the correct string4 during debugging, the rest of the code works fine.

Any tips on correcting this?
