I have two strategies:

* Turn off the WYSIWYG Editor for the site building process. To maintain a site after that, I'll consider turning the WYSIWYG editor back on - especially if others less familiar with HTML are keeping the content current.

* Copy the text from Word to Notepad or TextEdit to purge the excess characters. Copy from the text editor and paste into Manila stories.

Maybe another strategy would be to save Word files as Text and then copy to Manila.
