Hi Ellen,
I will take a stab at answering your questions.
1) Yes, most definitely.
2) Yes, via RSS
3) Yes, There are optional email notifications when News Items are posted, edited etc.
4) Yes, I believe so.
5) Yes, Manila sets a cookie when a user logs in. So they will stay logged in (on that computer) until they intentionally log out.
6) Yes, users can access old content via a built in calendar system. Frontier also has built in backup functionality to backup the entire Manila site as often as you want.
7) Yes, In the exact same manner that content can be searched on this site. Via the search box on the right.
8) Yes, Using a discussion Group just like the one we are using right now.
I'm probably not the best person to give an answer on the pros and cons of it being based on proprietary software. I do know there are a ton of other CMS software out there. For the most part Manila is a complete solution and will not need to be modified in any way that will make it nessesary to know Usertalk (the scripting language Manila uses) But Usertalk is a pretty straight forward scripting language so learning how to use it well enough to write simple scripts is far from impossible.
My advise would be for you to sign up for a ManilaSite Free Hosted Trial [1] And try it out for yourself before you buy it. Make sure it can do what you want it to.
Hope this helps.
-Marlin
And just to cover all the bases I am not affiliated with Userland in any way other than being a noobie just like you.
