Hi Ken, I agree with David Bayly's response.

We have a "member only" configuration for READING and WRITING to our disucssion forums.

We have enabled membership confirmation and this stops the spammers in their tracks.

I use the "Access Restrictions" more like a set of embargoes.. That is, I can set a news item [for instance] to expire at a set time or perhaps be revealed/available publicly.
