New Message: making a news item pending

Our code uses manilaSuite.rpcHandlers.newsItem.create() to post news items. I am looking for a way to save a draft of a news item without releasing it. What is the best way to do that?

BTW - the flPostToHomePage flag in the parameters does not seem to do the trick - the news item is released regardless of the state of that flag.
