Not sure if this really helps but I came up with a little trick to use a dns proxy to create a url like static.mydomain.com. I mapped that to my server (After changingd apache's port to 8081.)

So for example I now have static.mydomain.com pointing to my server: http://example.com/8081

Then setup static rendering/static files.

Upload a gem and the URL will be http://www.static.example.com/yourFile.xml and be served by apache.

The only drawback to this method that I can see is that you can only have one domain to serve all your images/files.

Hope this helps.
