New Message: Customizing Display of Day, Month, Year newsItem posted

hello
one of my users wants the newsItem template altered so that the posted time stamp appears like so
"Thursday, November 2, 2006"
the closest i can get is
"November 2, 2006; 6:31:41 AM"

he would like no time to appear and would like the day item was posted to show

the macros page http://macros.userland.com/basic/
does not seem to offer any way of customizing this beyond choosing from the default drop-downs in the newsItem customize template page in the prefs section

any ideas?
