How could an auxiliary template break bodytext into three columns?

I must be missing the point of additional templates. I had in mind that a page layout might have a field for the left column text, a field for the middle column text and a right column text. At this time I am using viewOpml to display source stories in another story's columns. I'm trying to support non HTML coders in this effort.
