New Message: Using mailStory for news items

Would it be possible to modify the mailStory macro so that it can be used to mail news items on the newsItems/viewFullItem$messagenumber page?

I was contemplating trying to make the modification myself, but was wondering if there was a reason that mailStory had been limited to discussion group messages and stories only. I'd like to be able to add the mailStory macro to the Full News Item Template.
