We'd also be interested in using that function in that way too at some stage.

 I take it you've tried different date formats ? DD/MM/YY DD/MM/YYYY etc ...

Then there is the US versus non US date format thing. E.g. posting datetime on this site is set as MM/DD/YYYY HH:MM:SS
